Honeymoonin' Iceland: The Imagine Peace Tower

Jan 8, 2013

Y'all probably already know my excitement about finally seeing Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace Tower cause I blogged/tweeted/facebooked about it a bazillion times, but for those of you who don't know . . .

Yoko Ono had this tower built in memory of John Lennon in 2006 on a small island right outside of Reykjavik.
She chose this location because of Iceland's eco-friendly use of geothermal energy.
The tower is only lit from the day of his birth, October 9th, to the day of his death, December 8th.
(Which couldn't have worked out more perfectly for the timing of our trip)

The tower itself has a message from Yoko to John on it, as well as the word Imagine written in 24 different languages.
Now, from our chats with a couple of locals, they weren't too thrilled about this tourist attraction and they seemed to think "that big light" was pretty stupid.
We thought it was pretty awesome.
We booked a tour late one night and even though it was stupidly cold, we really learned a lot.
It was incredible to see the tower up close and personal.
Silly me forgot my tripod, so my pictures are ok, but for future reference, if anyone goes there with a DSLR then bring your tripod!
At one point during the tour, an airplane flew through the beam of light.
So another tip, if you are in a transcontinental flight over Iceland then request that your pilot fly over the light.
. . . which may potentially turn out awkward.
"Hey mister, can we fly through that light thingy about the Beatle in Iceland?"
There was also a wish tree where you write a wish and hang it on the tree (which is kinda self explanatory I guess)

Now, this is quite possibly my favorite pic from the trip.
Once the tour was over, the guide planted the idea in our head that some tourists like to take "light saber" pictures with the tower, similar to the way people take pictures with the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
(Side note: Watching people take silly pics in Pisa was also one of the highlights of my trip to Italy)
Anyways, I convinced Josh to do the light saber picture.
Conveeeeeeeniently, my camera was acting up, so while everyone else in the tour was walking by Josh was holding an awkward batter position for about a minute.
Meanwhile, I was in near tears because he was so embarrassed and SO awkward.
I take full advantage at any chance to make Josh feel uncomfortable because it is so rare, and because he is so good at doing it back to me.
Anyways, the picture kinda came out how it was supposed to, but I don't really care.
The look on his face and the awkward smile are all I wanted.
