Tunesday: Sylvan Esso "Coffee"

Aug 26, 2014

Today I wrote seven blog posts that I doubt I ever get around to posting.
I'm the worst, right?
I haven't been able to get this song out of my head lately, so I felt the need to blog about it instead.

Strange video.
Incredible song.
I dare you to take it off of repeat.

Tunesday: Asgeir Trausti

Jul 29, 2014

While in Iceland on our honeymoon, we were forced to listen to Icelandic radio in our rental car (because our silly American selves forgot an auxillary cord).
We would occaisionally hear some Sigur Ros and Of Monsters and Men but there was one song we kept hearing that tickled our fancy.
Although there wasn't a single lyric in English, the tune was quite contagious.
Somehow we managed to figure out the name of the song and the artist (I still don't quite know how we did it) and we found it on iTunes.
Nearly two years later, we still play it often.
It's kind of entertaining to hear us attempt to sing/mumble the words like we know what they mean.
Much to our surprise, the same artist, Asgeir Trausti, recently debuted an English album, under the name Asgeir.
As soon as Josh heard it on one of our favorite local radio stations he immediately yelled "this is that random Icelandic guy!"
Thanks to Shazam we realized he was right.
Josh's musical ears kind of blow my mind, and Asgeir's musical brain and voice and skillzzz blow my mind harder.

Go here to check out his newest stuff, it's quite lovely.
Go here to catch up on our Icelandic Honeymoon, in case you missed it.

Tunesday: Bon Iver "Heavenly Father"

Jul 21, 2014

It's hard to beat a song written by Justin Vernon and Co. for Zach Braff's newest movie (which he wrote, directed, and is starring in)

P.S. Remember that time Bon Iver said they were done making music?
Lies.

Tunesday: Jack White's ULTRA LP

May 12, 2014

There's not much that can be said to preface this video.
You have never and will never see anything like it.
Jack White is an unparalleled talent.
Vinyls will never be the same.

Tunesday: Typhoon {A Take Away Show}

Jan 29, 2014

This band provided the soundtrack for our anniversary trip to Portland (appropriately so, because they are locals and we were able to see them perform while we were there).
We briefly heard them at the Sasquatch Music Festival at The Gorge in 2011, but we really fell in love with them after seeing them perform live in Portland.
Over the last few months their songs have been on repeat non-stop in our cars, on our record player, and our desktop and I'm not even close to being sick of it.
Similar to the feeling you get when you hear your wedding first dance song, we can't hear their songs without having flashbacks to the joy experienced driving alongside the Columbia River surrounded by the waterfalls and mountains of Oregon.
The songs in this video are a few years old, but their newest album White Lighter is definitely worth a measely $9.99 iTunes purchase.

Tunesday: Dink's Song

Dec 3, 2013

We have unfortunately returned back to Texas following our weekend getaway to Portland and are attempting to come down out of our pacific northwest coma.
While I am wading through a bazillion photos and working on blog updates about the incredible surprise anniversary trip Josh planned for us, I figured I would share this piece of magic he recorded last night.

We recently saw the trailer for Inside Llewyn Davis and fell in love with Marcus Mumford's version of the song.
Though, I must admit, Josh's versions always seen better to me.
I'm thinking it will be a good song for his audition.
Oh, by the way, he was contacted a few weeks ago by The Voice and was asked him to privately audition in January.
I would assume this YouTube video (with over 6,000 views) is to blame.
He swears he's not going to do it, but him posting YouTube videos was the result of a lost bet, so fingers crossed he will lose another bet soon?

Tunesday: Josh covers Sufjan Stevens

Sep 5, 2013

This is my husband and he has a brave little soul.

I post these videos so that hopefully his bravery will grow.

Tunesday: The Head & The Heart "Shake"

Aug 28, 2013

This song can best be described with one word:
Addicting.
If this song sets the tone for their new album, then it's gonna be mind blowingly good.
Hopefully we'll get to hear more new tunes by Charity and the gang at The Gorge!
SO pumped for three entire magical nights of The Head and The Heart, Lord Huron, and Dave Matthews.
I can hardly stand my excitement.

Tunesday: Passengers "Let Her Go"

Aug 13, 2013

Credit for this video goes to Thomas, our good friend who is working in Africa right now.
He stayed with us a few weekends ago and literally played this song on repeat for hours.
'tis a good'n

Tunesday: Edward Sharpe "Life is Hard"

Aug 6, 2013

1) Jade melts my heart.
2) They are musical geniuses.
3) They never cease to quit making magically happy music.
4) SO pumped they are coming to Dallas this fall.
5) Looking forward to more incredible new tunes like this on their new album!

Two-for-Tunesday: Josh covers Bob Dylan + Avett Brothers New Song

Jul 30, 2013

Finally.
We get some Dylan from Josh
P.S.
. . . all the magic that comes after the two minute mark stays on repeat in my car.

. . . in case that didn't tickle your fancy (if it didn't then we can't be friends, sorry) there's this:
The Avett Brothers performed a "never-before-heard" song backstage at the Newport Folk Festival.
Happy Tunesday, folks.

Once upon a time . . .

Jul 19, 2013

. . . Josh thought he would be hilarious by writing a country song about college.
I may be biased, but in my humble opinion I believe that it ended up being more awesome than funny.
I cried.
It made me miss college.
So much.
He included references to their old house where everyone would gather after the bar to play music (after they had gained some liquid courage, of course) and references to our favorite restaurant (Sundown) and even a reference to the time period where I was in grad school and driving back and forth on the weekends to visit everyone.
P.S.
This is the first song Josh has ever written himself and recorded.
It only took me 6 months to convince him to let me post it on the internet.
His one stipulation was that I state that this was only a country imitation and that he was not being serious by any means.
(I mean, didn't the cheesy grin and flailing eyebrows not make that clear enough?)

He's slowly but surely gaining confidence.
Cross your fingers for a new recording next week.
My vote goes towards either The Avett Brothers or Bob Dylan.
Happy Friday!

Tunesday: Matthew & The Atlas "I Will Remain"

Jul 11, 2013

Again, all credit goes to Josh.
He knows how to find the goods.

For the life of me, I couldn't find a video online that was the equivalent of the studio version of this song.
Go to iTunes asap and make a purchase y'all, it's well worth it!

P.S.
I spy Barney Stinson.

Tunesday: Josh covers Avett Brothers "November Blue"

Jun 27, 2013

...one of my favorite of Josh's covers.
Do I say that everytime?
This one is from about a year ago, but I made it into an mp3 and put it on my iPod.
#1 fan.
Try to hold out until the 5 minute 14 second mark, its most definitely the highlight.

Tunesday: Volcano Choir

Jun 19, 2013

Thank you Jesus for letting Volcano Choir release another album.
We are counting down the days until their second albums arrival on September 3.

Thankfully, iTunes is letting you receive a copy of the song featured in this trailer if you pre-order their cd.
Don’t think, just do it.
(P.S. In case you aren't convinced or have never heard of Volcano Choir, it's another one of Justin Vernon's side projects.)

Tunesday: Eddie Vedder & Corin Tucker "Golden State"

May 20, 2013

Once upon a not so sober night, Josh made me record this song with him.
Hopefully, that version will never make it onto the internet.
Your ears would explode.
This song has had us both hooked for a few years though, I hope y'all appreciate it as much as we do!

Tunesday: Vampire Weekend "Diane Young"

May 8, 2013

This song + their new album streaming free on iTunes = I'm one happy camper
Can't get enough of these boys.

Now they just need to come back to Dallas.
Fingers crossed.

Tunesday: The Tallest Man {and his woman}

Apr 23, 2013

This song is my crack.
I thought it didn't get better than hearing The Tallest Man on Earth perform live, but little did I know he had an equally talented wife (who is pretty incredible with the accordion)
What I would give to be able to match Josh's musical talent . . .
Is it weird that I've already found an accordion on craigslist?
I think there's potential.

Tunesday: A Justin Vernon throwback

Apr 4, 2013

Last year Josh came across some old Justin Vernon recordings (from way before the Bon Iver days) and since then I haven't been able to listen to this song only once. It basically lives on repeat in my car.
Ignore the video, just listen.

Tunesday: Another cover song by the one and only

Mar 27, 2013

It's quite the challenge to get this kiddo to let me post videos of him singing online.
. . . but after being on call the other night at at the ER for 5 hours, I came home to another good'n from my sweet little husband.
(He only records himself when I'm not home, so I'll take that as a hint to just shop more or something, ya know, for the sake of good music)
This one gave me chills and brought a few tears to my eyes.

Since he was SO awesome and let me post two whole videos of him singing last week, I bought him a ukelele.
. . . and even though he had never touched one before Saturday, as soon as he picked it up he was already strumming away like he had been playing for years.
He's not human.
Fingers crossed for more tunes coming soon.
